Our current defenses are inadequate.
Regarding “New Cyber Rules Aim to Thwart Attacks” (U.S. News, Jan. 17): The central and undeniable reality is that the federal government’s cybersecurity is inadequate. Protecting the nation and its citizens requires a shift in mindset— cybersecurity must be prioritized as a fundamental pillar of national defense. At its core, this comes down to being more proactive.
Software ecosystems are more interconnected than ever before, making attack surfaces exponentially more interconnected and complex. As a result, vulnerabilities spill across systems in ways that are difficult to predict, identify and contain. The risks grow in parallel with the innovation driving these systems.
